How Many 10 AWG Wires Fit in 3/4" EMT Conduit?
Direct NEC Chapter 9 Table 4 & Table 5 calculation for 10 AWG conductors (30A water heater, dryer & A/C circuits) inside 3/4" EMT Conduit.
NEC Answer: 10 Conductors Maximum (10 AWG THHN at 40% Fill)
10 Wires
Max 10 AWG THHN / THWN-2
Standard Run (40% Fill = 0.213 sq in)
15 Wires
Conduit Nipple ≤ 24" (60% Fill)
NEC Chapter 9 Note 4 Nipple Allowance
8 Wires
Max 10 AWG XHHW / XHHW-2
40% Fill (0.0243 sq in per wire)
0.533 sq in
3/4" EMT Total Area
Internal Diameter: 0.824"
| Insulation Type | Single 10 AWG Area | 1 Wire (53% Fill) | 2 Wires (31% Fill) | 3+ Wires (40% Standard) | Nipple ≤24" (60% Fill) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| THHN / THWN-2 | 0.0211 sq in | 0.282 sq in | 0.165 sq in | 10 wires (0.213 sq in) | 15 wires (0.320 sq in) |
| XHHW / XHHW-2 | 0.0243 sq in | 0.282 sq in | 0.165 sq in | 8 wires (0.213 sq in) | 13 wires (0.320 sq in) |
NEC Chapter 9 Derating Reminder for 10 Conductors
While 3/4" EMT Conduit physically and legally holds up to 10 10 AWG THHN wires under the 40% cross-sectional area rule, remember NEC Table 310.15(C)(1): whenever you place 4 to 6 current-carrying conductors in the same raceway, you must derate their 90°C ampacity to 80% (and to 70% for 7 to 9 current-carrying conductors).
